Balmorhea State Park and The Caverns of Sonora

After leaving Las Cruces and heading to San Antonio, we planned for two one night stops to help split the 11+ hours of driving. We found Balmorhea State Park by looking through google maps. We got a tip from another full-time RVer regarding the Caverns of Sonora. Both were just a few miles off the highway.

Balmorhea State Park

This park was built in the 1930's by the Civilian Conservation Corps, during the great depression.  Being around the water was refreshing after spending so much time in the desert. This was the first time since we left Utah on our full time RV adventure, that it was cold. So getting into the natural spring probably wasn't going to happen. The campground was about 50% full, which made it nice to not have many neighbors.

If I am up on something, Beau thinks he has to be up there as well.

Turtle jail!

He figured out how to escape.

Great view from the camping spot for the night.

Caverns of Sonora

This was our stop on the second night of our drive down to San Antonio.  The Caverns of Sonora has a small campground on the property.  Luckily, there were only two of us camping there.  The spaces were awfully close and would get unconformable if the campground was full.  The cavern tour we went on was about 2 miles in length and took us to a depth of about 155 feet underground.  The tour took an hour and a half.  This cave is known for it's helictites, soda straws, and crystal formations as well as it's stalactites, stalagmites, and columns.  This is probably the third large cave we have been in and it was by far the best. The pictures we took don't do it justice.

Heading down.

War Club Stalactites.

On our way out.

The peacocks decided to be part of the tour.

Of course the turkey had to join the show.

That's a wrap!  On to San Antonio for a week and then down to Corpus Christi and the Gulf of Mexico.
